THE GAME

Sink the Conic — cover image

Sink the Conic is an educational game inspired by Battleship: the “ships” are conics (parabolas, ellipses, hyperbolas, circles) and the “torpedoes” are lines.

You fire a line and observe the intersection points with the hidden conics; once your hypothesis is ready, you enter the equation to sink the ship.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. The board is the square with coordinates |x| ≤ 50, |y| ≤ 50.
  2. The computer generates two hidden conics, with “clean” parameters that favour hand calculations.
  3. The player picks one of the proposed lines and FIRES: the intersection points appear.
  4. When ready, the player enters the general equation A x² + B xy + C y² + D x + E y + F = 0: if it matches, the ship is sunk!
